Products sold in the country must include a label with the Burmese description starting from March next year. The time frame is set because the Consumers Protection Law was enacted in March 2019, this gives manufacturers and distributers one year to prepare.

“As consumers normally don’t understand English, we need to have Burmese descriptions on every product so that people will know how to properly use products,” said U Win Khaing, General Secretary of Myanmar Pharmaceutical and Medical Equipment Entrepreneurs’ Association.

Since the Ministry of Commerce has announced that every product must have a product description in Burmese. Labels should include descriptions on proper usage, storage, allergy warnings and possible side effects must be included in the Burmese language. This is especially important for food, products used in the home, children’s products, telecommunications, drugs, cosmetics, chemical products, commodity products, and commercial use machines.

Manufacturers or distributors who fail to include product descriptions will receive a warning a first-time offense. More serious penalties will include fines, the products being banned from the market or business being banned for an undisclosed period of time.

The maximum penalty is a permanent banning of the business, but failure to follow the order after that, can result in a three-year jail term, or a fine of K5 million Kyat or under certain circumstances, both.
