The Directorate of Industrial Supervision and Inspection (Mandalay) will suspend SME membership applications, both online and offline, throughout December to allow time for the agency to work on expanding the registration system and review existing data.
In July 2018, the directorate launched online registration through a web portal to make it easier for owners of small and medium enterprises to register their business. It has also introduced e-payment for registration fees.
The temporary suspension of registration is meant to allow the directorate time to ensure that data provided by applicants are complete and accurate. The agency collects data on SMEs in collaboration with other government agencies under a pilot project to ensure availability of accurate data.
There are more than 70,000 registered SMEs in Myanmar. The Mandalay region has the largest number of registered SMEs, including over 10,000 small enterprises and 500 medium-size enterprises.
