Pyithu Hluttaw Rejects Proposal to Allow Motorbikes Outlying Yangon Townships

U Aye Naing, a lawmaker from South Dagon constituency, submitted a proposal to the Pyithu Hluttaw to decide whether or not to allow motorbikes in six of Yangon’s outlying townships. However, parliament did not accept the proposal for discussion because the objection votes outnumbered the seconded votes on the proposal.
The six townships under consideration included: East Dagon, North Dagon, South Dagon, Dagon Seikkan, Hlaingtahaya Township, and Shwepyitha Township.
“I submitted this proposal for the sake of safety and law and order for the people living in the suburbs located at the outskirt of Yangon,’’ U Aye Naing said.
The proposal was turned down by a vote of 265-50, with the majority objecting to the proposal.
Yangon City banned motorbikes on city roads over a decade, but people living in these six suburban areas are using motorbike despite the ban because of its affordability and convenience of transportation.
The Yangon Region Transport Authority, believing that e-bikes pose no threat to road safety in addition to its advantage of low emissions, is planning to allow e-bikes in the townships under YCDC’s administration, areas where YBS buses cannot thoroughly cover.
Motorbikes are only allowed in two townships within city limits — Dala and Seikkyi Kanaungto. Motorbikes are allowed in all of Yangon Region’s townships outside of Yangon City Limits such as: Htaukkyant, Thanlyin, Kyauktan, Thongwa, Kayan, Twantay, Kawhmu, Kungyangon, Hlegu, Hmawbi, Taikkyi, Htantabin and Coco Islands. Coco Islands are located in the Andaman Sea, southwest of Yangon City.
